    Theory-Based Affordances of Utilitarian, Hedonic and Dual-Purposed Technologies: A Literature Review

    The key to an information system’s (IS) success is its value experienced by the user. A promising approach to enhance user value is to design for the users’ experiential desires. For example, fulfilled experiential desires enhance the users’ satisfaction and loyalty. Despite these benefits, few design principles exist for developing IS according to the users’ experiential desires. Therefore, the aim of this literature review is to aggregate the current state of knowledge concerning the different theoretical perspectives on utilitarian, hedonic and dual-purposed IS. We build a framework that illustrates the relationship between different theoretical perspectives on IS affordances (i.e., motivational, cognitive, affective, and social) and different technology types (i.e., utilitarian, hedonic, dual-purposed). The presented framework offers a starting point for the development of theory-based design principles for experiential affordances of IS. We conclude with a summary of opportunities for future research to extend our knowledge of experientially fulfilling IS

    Using the Default Option Bias to Influence Decision-Making While Driving

    Gaining a better understanding of human–computer interaction in multiple-goal environments, such as driving, is critical as people increasingly use information technology to accomplish multiple tasks simultaneously. Extensive research shows that decision biases can be utilized as effective cues to guide user interaction in single-goal environments. This article is a first step toward understanding the effect of decision biases in multiple-goal environments. This study analyzed data from a field experiment during which a comparison was made between drivers’ decisions on parking lots in a single-goal environment and drivers’ decisions in a multiple-goal environment when being exposed to the default option bias. The article shows that the default option bias is effective in multiple-goal environments. The results have important implications for the design of human–computer interaction in multiple-goal environments

    Adaptation of topoisomerase I paralogs to nuclear and mitochondrial DNA

    Topoisomerase I is essential for DNA metabolism in nuclei and mitochondria. In yeast, a single topoisomerase I gene provides for both organelles. In vertebrates, topoisomerase I is divided into nuclear and mitochondrial paralogs (Top1 and Top1mt). To assess the meaning of this gene duplication, we targeted Top1 to mitochondria or Top1mt to nuclei. Overexpression in the fitting organelle served as control. Targeting of Top1 to mitochondria blocked transcription and depleted mitochondrial DNA. This was also seen with catalytically inactive Top1 mutants, but not with Top1mt overexpressed in mitochondria. Targeting of Top1mt to the nucleus revealed that it was much less able to interact with mitotic chromosomes than Top1 overexpressed in the nucleus. Similar experiments with Top1/Top1mt hybrids assigned these functional differences to structural divergences in the DNA-binding core domains. We propose that adaptation of this domain to different chromatin environments in nuclei and mitochondria has driven evolutional development and conservation of organelle-restricted topoisomerase I paralogs in vertebrates

    DESIGNING HEDONIC USER EXPERIENCES: THE EFFECT OF PSYCHOLOGICAL NEED FULFILMENT ON HEDONIC MOTIVATION

    Within the last two decades the investigation of emotional and experiential influences in technology acceptance gained increasing attention. Especially in the context of the Internet of Things (IoT) re-searchers discovered the potential of designing hedonic experiences for customers. Recent studies integrated hedonic motivation as a core construct of the Unified Theory of Adoption and Use of Technology (UTAUT2) and confirmed the importance of its role. Nevertheless, we still lack research on the psychological processes underlying the hedonic motivation. Previous research on user experience hints at psychological need fulfilment to be the construct that explains the role of the hedonic motivation within UTAUT2. In the preliminary stages of the investigation, we establish a relationship be-tween psychological need fulfilment and hedonic motivation in a field study. The aim of this study is to make a theoretical contribution by identifying the psychological needs that underlie the hedonic motivation within the framework of UTAUT2 in the context of IoT devices at home. Moreover, the expected outcomes are meant to serve as guidelines for the development of enjoyable products

    Towards Identifying Contextual Factors on Parking Lot Decisions

    The relevance of contextual factors that adapt in-car recommendations to the driver’s current situation is not yet fully understood. This paper presents a field study that has been conducted in order to identify relevant contextual factors of in-car parking lot recommender systems. Surprisingly, most contextual factors examined, i.e., weather, luggage, and traffic conditions, did not have a significant effect on the parking lot decision in the conducted field study. Only the urgency of the trip and the willingness to walk have significant effects on the decision outcome. Therefore, automobile manufacturers should focus on understanding the relevance of different contextual factors when developing user models for in-car recommender systems

    Distribution trends of European dragonflies under climate change

    Aim: Poleward range shifts of species are among the most obvious effects of climate change on biodiversity. As a consequence of these range shifts, species communities are predicted to become increasingly composed of warm-dwelling species, but this has only been studied for a limited number of taxa, mainly birds, butterflies and plants. As species groups may vary considerably in their adaptation to climate change, it is desirable to expand these studies to other groups, from different ecosystems. Freshwater macroinvertebrates, such as dragonflies (Odonata), have been ranked among the species groups with highest priority. In this paper, we investigate how the occurrence of dragonflies in Europe has changed in recent decades, and if these changes are in parallel with climate change. Location: Europe. Methods: We use data from 10 European geographical regions to calculate occupancy indices and trends for 99 (69%) of the European species. Next, we combine these regional indices to calculate European indices. To determine if changes in regional dragonfly communities in Europe reflect climatic warming, we calculate Species Temperature Indices (STI), Multi-species Indicators (MSI) and Community Temperature Indices (CTI). Results: 55 of 99 considered species increased in occupancy at European level, 32 species remained stable, and none declined. Trends for 12 species are uncertain. MSI of cold-dwelling and warm-dwelling species differ in some of the regions, but increased at a similar rate at European level. CTI increased in all regions, except Cyprus. The European CTI increased slightly. Main conclusions: European dragonflies, in general, have expanded their distribution in response to climate change, even though their CTI lags behind the increase in temperature. Furthermore, dragonflies proved to be a suitable species group for monitoring changes in communities, both at regional and continental level.</p
